Cleaning & Descaling Your Appliances

Did you know that by not descaling your appliances regularly with a suitable appliance descaler you are decreasing appliance efficiency, increasing your appliance running costs and ultimately shortening their lifespan!

Appliances that use or generate hot water and/or steam are prone to gathering build-up of calcium deposits and lime scale (aka scale) especially on the heating element. Such appliances include your kettle, urn, electic jug, coffee machine, dishwasher, steam iron, steam oven, baby bottle steraliser and shower heads. Once the heating element is encrusted in a layer of scale the element struggles to conduct the neccessary amount of heat though this insulating layer of scale build-up. This in turn leads to overheating of the actual element which causes your appliance to burn out. By this time it's too late to rectify the problem and you have to spend your hard earned $$$ to replace the appliance.

Appliances such as dishwashers are not only prone to scale build-up but also encounter build-up of food remnants in the filters and pipes. Therefore, you should descale your dishwasher every 6 to 12 months to ensure that it is thoroughly cleaned out and operating at maximum efficiency (evn though in many cases you cannot see the build-up in your dishwasher).

The amount of time it takes for scale to destroy your appliances differs from region to region. As a general guide, appliances in hard water areas should be descaled approximately every 3 months. Otherwise, descaling every 6 months should be suitable. In soft water areas descaling can be extended to 12 month increments. Many appliance manufacturers recommend that you use their specific brand of descaler, which more often than not is quite expensive and isn't readily available in your local supermarket. The truth is that most appliance descalers, regardless of brand name, are very similar. So there is no reason to pay more for an appliance manufacturer's descaler when you can find a cheaper brand of descaler at your local supermarket - Rubbedin Descale Magic all purpose appliance descaler is approximately $5.35 at Woolworths/Safeway & Coles/Bilo.

Traditional Descaling Methods

Many people like to try traditional methods of descaling like lemon, bicarb soda or vinegar. Some of these methods can damage the appliance (e.g vinegar will damage a coffee machine). These methods also take a lot longer to work and don't perform as well as specialised descaling products (e.g vinegar will take approximately 1 hour). These methods are also usually less efficient because scale build-up begins to appear after a very short period of time. Therefore, using specialised appliance descalers is much more efficient because they're quicker (work in around 5 minutes) and the effect lasts considerably longer.
